hair, my work, style

Sometimes I think I should have been born in the South, because the only thing I love more than New England is big hair. Sadly I was not blessed with thick hair, and have spent years developing my own ways to boost the volume. This is the tutorial I use when I don’t want to blow dry my hair, in fact this hair starts out as having been slept on. In fact, when my hair was shorter it would turn out even bigger!
306387_578326557383_167373688_nBut that was a few years ago, so let’s start with today’s slept on hair.flatWould you look at that? Pathetic! It’s got a little bit of texture, since I put some mousse in it before bed, but there’s not much going on there.  I was way too tired to bother blow drying my hair!toolsThe tools: a nice hot flat-iron, got2be Powder’ful volumizing styling powder, Garnier Fructis hairspray, and a boar bristle brush.  Using too many products will weigh fine hair down, so I try never to use more than 3 products including hairspray.part11.  First things first, giving your hair a liberal douse of hair spray.  It’s OK to use the hairspray before using heat tools because it helps the hair hold the heat style.  You also want to use a heat protection spray, but sadly I don’t have one handy.
2.  You want to brush out the hair after you hair spray, so that the hair will lie smoothly for the iron and so the product will be distributed evenly through your hair.
3.  Section the hair.  I usually start with a section straight across below my ears, afterwards making a section across from the top of my ears, then another across at my temples, leaving a horseshoe at the top of my head.  That’s a pretty essential part of the process.
4.  I prefer to flat-iron my hair a few inches from the roots on the bottom layers, and curling the ends under.  I try to angle the sliding of the iron away from my head, at a 45 or 90 degree angle.part25.  When you get to the horse shoe start sectioning the hair straight across, using fairly thin sections.  It’s OK to use the boar bristle brush to smooth the flat ironed pieces out before and or after flat ironing them.
6&7.  The key to getting some volume here is to keep your hair at a 90 degree angle and to start close to the roots, pulling the iron up straight and backwards, curving the ends back.  If you tend to find your hair creasing you can try running the iron over the hair a few times quickly before taking your time with the final flick.
8.  Well look at that!  Shiny and ironed, but still lacking what I yearn for… volume.part39.  Give your freshly ironed hair a light spray, just for kicks and giggles.
10&11.  Ah, the love of my hair’s life: got2be Powder’ful!  This stuff does magic.  I swear.  It’s a fine powder that you rub between your fingers and palms, and…
12.  Massage it into your crown and anywhere else you want some volume! (If you don’t have this stuff, spray your roots with some dry shampoo and massage it in, then brush it through. Even if your hair is clean it gives some great volume and texture, plus there are a lot of great drugstore options out there.)shake itPowder’ful is available at drugstores, which is basically awesome. It’s inexpensive, under 10$, and I’ve had this particular container of it for… a few years. That’s pretty sweet! I highly recommend it for my girls who have thin, flat hair. It’s seriously my miracle worker. It doesn’t just add volume at the roots, it gives a thickening effect through the mid length as well, which is essential to that illusion of thick hair.done Maybe it’s the Southern Belle in my trying to get out, but since I figured out how to do this to my hair I’ve been loving the results. It’s a little bit Kelly from Saved by the Bell, a little bit news anchor blow out, and all me.
Do you have a go-to way to style your hair? I’d love to hear any tips and tricks my readers might have… or any questions they might have!dirty

SKIN3 Stridex Sensitive Skin Acne Wipes: I got introduced to this by sort of stealing it all the time from my old roommate (Sorry Holls!) and I’ve been hooked on it ever since.  I cut the pads in half and swipe it over my T-zone for oil control after I wash my face. It’s never been too hard on my sensitive skin.  I then put on a light moisturizer and I’m ready for life!

TOOLS1 Paw Pallet: I found this Paw Pallet on beautylish, and I’ll tell you what… it’s amazing.  For someone who loves (I mean, LOVES) to play with makeup it’s so much more sanitary than using the back of your hand.  You can find information on it here.

TOOLS2 Real Techniques Makeup Brushes:  I got a set of Real Techniques brushes from Ulta and I have to say they are super soft, super strong (no hairs falling out all over the place) and the most fantastic blending machines I’ve ever had.  I love using this one for blending concealer, eye shadow, applying highlighter… the list could go on.

SKIN1 Revlon ColorStay Makeup:  I hate makeup that moves.  This stuff doesn’t.  It’s really that simple.

SKIN2 Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser (Dark Circles): My mom was using this for a while and I decided to try it because I realized that when everyone was telling me I looked tired it was because I looked tired.  Not cool!  I’ve found it to be absolutely wonderful, it’s smooth and easy to blend, not to mention the application is as simple as clicking and swiping with the super soft thingy on the top.

MAKEUP1
Stila “In The Light” Palette: The colors, Duke, the colors!  This things has be most incredible colors for a girl who stays in the neutral range more often than not!  It has a wonderful light bone color, two pretty sparkle/metallic gold colors, some absolutely incredible rose tones, a denim blue for those fancy days,  and the essential darks brown, gray and black.  And let’s not forget the fabulously smudge-able dark brown liner that’s included.  Basically, I love this pallet.

LASHES
L’Oreal Telescopic Shocking Extensions Mascara:  I have eyelash issues.  They are not super long.  They are partially blonde.  And one side has more than the other.  Basically I don’t really focus on them too much.  But this mascara makes them so long and beautiful without looking like spiders are squished in between my eyelids!  It doesn’t get super clumpy, and it stays on all day.

MAKEUP2
Make Up Forever High Definition Powder:  It sets the makeup on the skin.  I couldn’t afford this by myself, I got it as a reward for spending too much money at Sephora. This little sample size has lasted me 9 months and there is still a lot left.  Someday I’ll have to invest… scary thought.  Make Up Forever has a good reputation because it’s good quality makeup, but the money spent will make me cry.

HAIR3
got2b POWDER’ful:  This white powder does something to the moisture in stringy thing hair and turns it into va-va-voom!  It’s like magic.  And it’s really affordable.  It’s sold in drugstores.

HAIR2
got2b Oil-licious Dry Oil Hair Taming Mist:  I don’t like oily hair, thankfully this stuff is so light that it doesn’t weigh hair down and make it look oily.  I like to call science like this “magic”.

HAIR1
Ion Repairing Oil Treatment:  When my hair starts feeling like hay I start running a few drops of this through after I take a shower.  It doesn’t weigh my hair down, and it does make it feel super silky and smooth.

RANDOM1
Juicy Couture Peace, Love and Juicy: It’s fruity, it’s fresh, it’s light… It’s officially a daily thing for me.  And it was, like, $20 at TJ Maxx.  So I feel fancy for cheap!

It’s the hair. It’s really all about the hair.

I have always had so much envy for KiKi’s hair. It is never too done, the color is always in the blond family (except when it’s red), and she parts her hair in a side part on the same side of her head as I do! We are obviously going to be hair twins forever!

I think that the intense hair envy really got started when I saw her in Wimbledon. Her hair in that movie is so naturally textured, which is exactly what I wish my hair was. Her character puts it up simply to get it out of her face because she is an athlete, so it’s carefree in that her do’s are about function, not really how it looks. Her character is an american tennis player, and you would think that she were going to become a version of Anna Kournikova, because of the blond hair and tennis skirts, but because her hair texture is allowed to be a bit roughed up, wavy, loose, her character can’t be confined to the typical blond athlete that our media knows so well. Instead her hair adds to the carefree and adventurous aura of her character’s personality.

Basically, I want it. dirty

Who, me?

I consider myself an eccentric who looks good in jeans, or an amateur at adulthood. I live in Maine, enjoy writing and photography as creative outlets, and listen to some of the worst music you've ever heard. I’m good at sin and bad at following Christ, but I’m still letting Him take the lead. Dirty is my middle name. So is Sean.
The purpose of this blog is to keep a record while I'm unearthing treasures, mapping truths, and navigating life.
