Dirty's Report, Human Interest, Lies My Heart Tells Me

There are many logical arguments against the act of killing oneself. Sadly, the desire to kill yourself does not rest on logic. There are so many reasons that people discover in themselves, their lives, their hearts that add to the continually mounting evidence in a case brought against their existence. Often these trials are kept secret, and there are times when the accuser wins. And there are times when that leads to death.
Those who knew someone who committed suicide can find themselves not knowing what to do with themselves. They don’t know where to direct their questions to have actual answers, because the answers are often gone. The world gets flipped upside down an turned back right side up, but in the process someone went missing. Maybe they couldn’t hold on, maybe they let go to fall into the sky.
National Suicide Prevention Week (NSPW) is an annual week-long campaign in the United States to inform and engage health professionals and the general public about suicide prevention and warning signs of suicide. You can find more information here, here, and here.
I think acknowledging and supporting broken people is an incredible way to show the love of Christ. In Psalm 107 there are stories of different people who lose all hope, but in the moment they call out to God they are delivered (v.20). What better way to serve God than to deliver His word to those in despair?
As Jesus said, “go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole of creation” (Mark 16:15). He gave us a job to do, because we have a battle to fight for every life. We are to defend, aid, and relay the truth:
Yes, you deserved death, but you have a savior who has given you the chance to have a new life. He loved you so much that he already died for you (John 3:16). In Him there is no condemnation, and your accuser will be silenced (Revelation 12:10).
So I encourage you to keep the word of God in your heart and to pray for those who are struggling. Pray for the families and friends of those who are already suffering from the silence of unanswered questions. Pray that the body of Christ does not fail to support the heavy hearted, and that Christ will be given the opportunity to take their burdens.dirty

Throw-Back-Thursday: Painfully Fashionable

shoesDuring my senior year of high school I wrote for the school paper. I had some pretty interesting articles, including documenting the rising trend of shopping at the Salvation Army and a fairly controversial piece on homosexual students at the school. I also had my own column, which I won a New England Scholastic Press Association Special Achievement Journalism Award for. It’s one of the only pieces I have managed to save from all of the columns I wrote, and now you get to read it!
And now, Throw-back-Thursday presents: Painfully Fashionable.

Right now, as I write this, I am wearing 4 and ½ inch heels that are as thick as my thumb. It feels as though the balls of my feet have been thrust into a bucket of tacks, each one carefully plunging into my flesh, causing me great pain. And this is the most comfortable pair of heels I can find.
I am doing this so that by the time prom comes around I will not be able to feel my feet, and so will be able to wear a pair of heels for one single night. Not even an entire day, mind you. Just for one short night.
So as I have been walking, balancing, and falling in these stilts I have also been asking myself, why is this torture such a necessity?
Why do people have to do stupid things to look cool, like forcing their feet into painful shoes?
It’s not fair. My feet are in pain so that my legs can look like a dollar and a half, and I can reach my prom date if he’s tall.
That is it.
Actually, I’m a bit in awe of the girls who wear these twin ambassadors of pain to school. I also fear for their safety, seeing as so many girls have bad balance and fall down stairs.
These “shoes” are almost status symbols as well. I’m never scared of a girl in flats, unless she is on the football team. But if some little freshman with 5 and ½ inch stilettos comes over, especially if I’m in a corner, I’m going to be a bit frightened.
Maybe it’s the height. Maybe it’s the fact that they can, in fact, wear these things that they call shoes on slippery linoleum.
Nevertheless, fear strikes my heart when they come clomping down the hall (yes, clomping) and I am comforted when they walk by, and don’t chose to challenge me to a brawl after school outside the Steve White gym (which would be a bad choice anyway, seeing how it’s so close to guidance).
Then there is the fact that some boys (Yes, boys. We’re still in high school here.) Find girls in heels more “assertive”. Translated, “assertive” equals “hot”.
So are these girls at the advantage? Not necessarily. Star of the hit show The OC, Mischa Barton, has become infamous for wearing ballet flats out and about, and many a boy find her quite the ticket.
More and more magazines, including In Style and Glamour, have been featuring flats in their “what to wear” sections.
And why not? They can be dressed up with sequins and fancy patterns, or dressed down using shiny material and ballet inspired bows.
Now that the public can see that there are more options than the twin ambassadors of pain, why not wear flats to the prom?
Maybe I should start a revolution. Maybe I should wear the cutest flats ever created and be the bell of the ball. Maybe I should get a shorter prom date.dirty

DANCE

I just made a chicken salad with bacon toasted cheese sandwich, which I am choosing to enjoy with whiskey on ice. When I got home from work I decided to do part of a yoga DVD and an entire Dancercize DVD.

On a side note, Dancercize is excellent because you feel like a complete idiot and you can’t understand what the instructor is doing. Then about halfway through you sort of figure it out and begin to feel like Jessica Alba in Honey, start putting your own little spin on it, then you realize you can’t see what they are doing because sweat is pouring down your face. You end up feeling tired, and a little bit awesome because you just did that entire DVD, even if it was barely 30 minutes.

Tonight I am celebrating. I am celebrating the changes that are happening in my life, not necessarily the changes that life is bringing me, but the changes that are happening from the inside out. I have made a decision to pursue a goal that requires me to get my act together. Thankfully it is one that will require preparation and prayer and really getting back into the Word, and that is only something that I will be able to do by asking for God to help me do it. It would seem that I completely forget that if I ask Him to help me He will. For some reason I think that I need to get myself back on track, and forget that without the H. Sizzle I am completely useless. I need God to change me from the inside out (again. Ugh.). And I am willing to be submissive, so I’ve decided to start asking on a regular basis. I might turn into The Worst, constantly praying and needing and whatnot, but I have a feeling that my version of The Worst is very different from His.

Speaking of changes from the inside out, today I found my first white hair. Not gray, white. Like, blinding white, all the way to the root. Obviously 26 has a lot of great things in store for me. Changes await, and I am not even scared!dirty

champagne

You know what I don’t like?  Tea.  You know what I’m drinking right now?  Tea.

I have a very romantic ideology of tea, what with it being British and something Doctor Who drinks for it’s antioxidants, but… I can’t.

For one thing, I don’t know if I can make it correctly.  The flavor seems off, and since I’m stealing it from my super cool brother while he isn’t home I’m guessing at how much to put in with the water in the thingy that he got from Teavana.  Also, it takes possibly 15 minutes to make.  That is a lot of time I could be sitting and playing Angry Birds, or doing laundry, or contemplating the idea of exercise while watching HBO.

I’ll finish my mug, just so I’m not wasting my brother’s money.  And I’m very overtired and feeling icky so maybe it’ll do me some good, but God, at such a cost.

I try at times to find different beverages to pass my time trying because I usually drink water or vodka, whiskey, tequila, etc.  I keep thinking that the key to not coming home from work and taking 2 shots while complaining about how no one in this family understands that dinner time is at 6:30 pm and not 9 pm is to switch from shots to something else.  I have considered coffee, but what with how it makes me feel sort of ill and jittery, plus how I am a fan of teeth whitening strips that may make my teeth all the more able to stain, I don’t really go for it these days.

I’ve been thinking that perhaps a pretentious sparkling water would work, as I’m a huge fan of San Pellegrino Pompelmo.  It is the most delicious of all the sparkling lemonade drinks in the entire world, but it’s expensive.  I got bills, son, about 40 grand of ‘em.  I can’t always be spending $10 on a six pack of mineral water goodness.  So I have tried to switch over to polar seltzer water.  I only buy it in 12 packs of cans because it’s the best way to force yourself to drink a carbonated beverage before it goes flat, and the rest of the supply won’t get flat either.  I have a few issues with this beverage as well though, such as how it’s not very tasty unless you doctor it.  This can be problematic because I always seem to find vodka in the mix… also, it’s quite dehydrating.  I always feel way more thirsty after having a can, and the more I drink the thirstier I am!  Then there is the fact that my brother likes to steal them and drink 6 out of 12 cans in 36 hours of their being in the house.  This becomes a problem, because I have an issue with running out of things.  For some reason I need to have something fully restocked before I use the last of it.

My point is, this is my journey.  It’s a part of my life and in this season I am trying to figure our how to tantalize and entertain my taste buds without alcohol.  Suggestions are welcome. dirty

TV Teaches Me Things part 3

tinadanceWhen I was a junior in college I was introduced to a show by a friend that she swore was one of the best things she’d ever seen in her life. It was one of the best things I had ever seen in my life as well, and I became a fangirl immediately. The show was 30 Rock.
Here is a random list of things that I have learned from my beloved show. It is incomplete, but it is still gonna happen.

  • Reaganing is defined as a continual streak of perfection. It is similar to a ‘no hitter’ in baseball however with a more broad application that refers to a series of non-related events. Named after the 40th President of the USA Ronald Reagan.
  • It is possible to have male-female friendships. Liz and Jack are strictly friends, business buddies, work spouses, mentor-mentee, and work husband slash uncle/co-worker slash little brother. It can work. It doesn’t have to get complicated and weird.
  • Live every week like it’s Shark Week.
  • There are secrets to fashion, ranging from tie colors (having more than 2 colors in a tie means you’re looking for a certain type of bar) to the proper way to dress as a spinster (sweatshirt, mom jeans, fanny pack), from the secrets behind trends (your friend is Michael Khors and will make wizard capes cool to hide your girlfriend’s pregnancy) to the wrong way to color block (tan slacks with a tan turtleneck will make you look like a giant condom), and of course the proper way to treat evening wear.

Lemon: “Why are you wearing a tux?”
    Jack: “It’s after 6. What am I, a farmer?”

  • Reality TV will always be on because it always wins the ratings.
  • The Bubble is defined as the world in which beautiful people live where they are protected from all criticism and all of life’s unpleasantries and never get a true sense of their actual limitations
  • Nothing brings people together like fear and/or the hatred of something. Bonding can happen over fear of the end of the world, budget cuts, or even bed bugs.
  • There are 3 things you should not do in a negotiation: speak first, smile, and negotiate against yourself.
  • You can’t out-crazy Tracy Jordan
  • An EGOT is the combination of winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony; the highest peak an actor can attain.
  • There is a difference between positive reinforcement and stating facts.

“I do look like the Arrow shirt man, I did lace up my skates professionally and I did do a fabulous job finishing my muffin.”

  • I want to go to there is an expression of yearning for a feeling, place, or situation. Use it in reality. I do.dirty

Who, me?

I consider myself an eccentric who looks good in jeans, or an amateur at adulthood. I live in Maine, enjoy writing and photography as creative outlets, and listen to some of the worst music you've ever heard. I’m good at sin and bad at following Christ, but I’m still letting Him take the lead. Dirty is my middle name. So is Sean.
The purpose of this blog is to keep a record while I'm unearthing treasures, mapping truths, and navigating life.
